Todd Phillips’s 2019 film “Joker” was both a financial and creative triumph, looking at the trip of a mentally ill man into craziness. Praises went for the somber tone of the film, Joaquin Phoenix’s gripping performance, and look at mental health issues. Returning today with a sequel, “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Phillips employs a musical note and co-stars Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Though it strives to be a bold and creative interpretation of the DC Comics heroes, the movie falters and presents a confused and uneven experience.
The Musical Experiment
Including musical elements sets one of the biggest departures from the original film. Lady Gaga’s performance of Harley Quinn points to this change straight away, and the film meets that anticipation with a run of musical moments all through. Though the concept of a musical “Joker” movie is fascinating, the performance falls far short.
